Any University Officer of Instruction or Administration Grade 10 or above who lives within the five boroughs of New York City, or who is being actively recruited by the University and plans to live in New York City, may request an application for his/her child by filling out a Request for Application Form for the 2009-2010 school year. Applications will be mailed out on a rolling basis.
University Affiliates who do not meet the above-mentioned criteria (part-time employees, officers under grade 10, undergraduate and graduate students etc.) who live in Districts 3 or 5 may enter the lottery for applications as a Community member.
PLEASE NOTE: ALL COLUMBIA FAMILIES INTERESTED IN APPLYING FOR THE 2009-2010 SCHOOL YEAR MUST SUBMIT A REQUEST FOR APPLICATION FORM BEFORE AN APPLICATION PACKET WILL BE MAILED OUT. COMPLETED APPLICATIONS ARE DUE BACK TO OUR ADMISSIONS OFFICE BY DECEMBER 15, 2008.
Open Houses, open to all families sent an application, will be held during November and December, and will provide an opportunity for parents to talk with teachers and administrators, and see classes in session.
A child’s completed application is due in our Admissions Office by December 15. Only families of students whose applications are completed by our deadline will be asked to set up an interview and visit to The School with their child. During the school visit, students will meet with classroom teachers for a skills screening. If it is determined that The School is unable to serve a particular child, we will communicate this in writing to the family on our decision date, and when possible, make suggestions about alternative placements.
In addition to filling out the application and attending their scheduled school visit and interview, families must provide The School at Columbia with proof of residence, a copy of their child’s birth certificate, records from his/her current school, and two teacher recommendations (one for applicants to kindergarten). To be considered for admission, families must complete the entire application process by January 30, 2009.
Admissions decisions for Columbia-affiliated families who have fully completed the admissions process by our deadline are made by the Provost’s office, which publishes the criteria that guide its admissions policies. In any given year, the number of applicants to Kindergarten may necessitate an additional internal lottery to determine the distribution of seats to University-affiliated families.
Acceptances for Columbia-affiliated families will be mailed out on February 13, 2009, in keeping with the timetable followed by most New York City independent schools. Families must sign and return the enrollment contract to the Admissions Office with the indicated deposit by February 27, 2009, to guarantee a space for their child in September.
Students not offered a spot at The School at Columbia will be placed on a waitlist for admission, should spaces become available. Because waitlists are not rolled over from one year to the next, families interested in applying for admission for the following school year will need to reactivate their application at the beginning of the next admissions season.
Columbia families are encouraged to avail themselves of the services of the School Search Service for assistance with childcare, nursery or K - 12 school placement. The School Search Service can be reached at 212-851-1895 or online at (schoolsearch.columbia.edu/contact.html).
The Admissions Office at The School is here to help you with any questions or concerns. Do not hesitate to contact our Director of Admissions and Enrollment, Rekha Sharma Puri at 212-851-4220 or rpuri@theschool.columbia.edu.
