Our Facilities

The School at Columbia University is located on 110th Street and Broadway in New York City. Bustling city streets, the New York skyline and the residents and visitors of the city surround The School which occupies 75,000 square feet of space spreading over five and a half floors of a twelve story building. The building was designed with a team of teachers, administrators, students, and architects and was based on the cutting edge and best practices of schools and offices around the country.

The mission of The School as a place that fosters life-long learning is supported by the architecture and design of the classrooms. Future and current needs were kept in mind as each space was planned. Classrooms were designed to be flexible by making sure furniture is on castors and doors can be opened to enlarge spaces. Each pod of classrooms is accessed through a main entrance area where students have their own lockers and area for meeting. In the lower grades bathrooms are accessible from the meeting area.

As a research and development laboratory, The School has endeavored to include an infrastructure that will support global learning and access to state-of-the-art applications and tools. Smart boards and projection systems are installed in all classrooms.  Desktops and laptops are available in every grade and videoconferencing equipment can be used in the conference spaces. Wireless networks run throughout the building. The School seeks to better understand and communicate the impact of technology on students. The School will also work to develop curricula that makes the best use of technology as tools for learning.
